5 Apps to Record Voice on an iPhone

Updated on: October 4, 2023

Sometimes, people need to record voices. Be it recording a lecture, an interview, maybe the minutes of a meeting, it’s something that needs to be done, and often in a pinch.

Luckily for us, our smartphones (iPhones here, specifically) are more than capable of doing just that. Here’s a some apps that can get that job done (and a whole lot more!) no matter what the occasion.

5 Apps for Recording Voice on an iPhone

Voice Memos (Free)

With it, one can quickly record memos, trim them down with the lightweight editor, and catalog them however one sees fit.

Essentially, it serves as a sandbox to figure out one’s priorities on voice recording. If it isn’t enough, maybe one of the other apps on the list will help, but chances are, most people will be served just fine by Apple’s offering. As they say, it’s hard to beat the attractive price of “free and preinstalled on your iPhone”

Evernote/OneNote (Free)

While not the best of the bunch, it’s hard to beat the benefits of having a one-app-does-all deal in your pocket. If you’re already using either of these apps, it might be worthwhile to check out their voice recording chops.

Voice Recorder & Audio Editor (Free, Premium $4.99)

It also lets you add notes to recordings, and gives you an ad-free experience. (Caveat: transcription works only for audio that is 30 minutes or less.)

Voice Recorder & Audio Editor records in  a variety of formats, including AIFF, CAF, M4A, WAV, and MP3.

Tetra (Paid, $9-$99)

Tetra is made specifically to record (and place using VoIP) calls. It complies with  the consent law by playing an announcement at the beginning of the call that the call is being recorded. The announcement can be turned off ,however, leaving legal compliance up to the operator.

Tetra doesn’t just record calls, it also transcribes them, even labeling each party to the call.

AudioNote2 (Free, Premium)

AudioNote2Even though note-making can be cumbersome and tedious process for students, it is still important to keep notes and this app fills that particular niche. AudioNote2 is a digital notebook with a sound recorder built in.

The notebook style layout isn’t just for show but each line takes input as text from the keyboard or the pencil mode where one can write naturally. Hit the record button and start taking notes, and  the notes are automatically time-stamped with the audio and highlights when the audio reaches to that point.

The recordings are saved on iCloud and you can choose Dropbox or even your phone to save the file. Sharing is easy and supported on multiple platforms. Other features like import audio from the phone and higher quality recordings are available in the paid version.
